Presbyterian College’s redshirt senior forward Jonah Pierce has been named Co-Big South Player of the Week, according to an announcement from the conference office on Monday.
Pierce becomes the 13th player in program history to receive the Big South Men’s Basketball Player of the Week award. Earlier this season, teammate Chidi Chiakwelu was recognized as Big South Freshman of the Week.
During last week’s games, Pierce averaged 22 points and 12 rebounds, shooting 62.1 percent from the field. His performance contributed to Presbyterian’s victories over UNC Asheville and Gardner-Webb.
In a narrow 71-70 win against UNC Asheville on January 14, Pierce recorded 24 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocked shots. He followed up with a strong showing at Gardner-Webb on January 17, scoring 20 points on nine-for-twelve shooting and collecting 13 rebounds in a 92-55 victory.
Pierce currently leads Presbyterian in scoring with an average of 15.8 points per game and is tenth in the Big South for scoring. He also leads the conference in rebounding at 9.5 boards per game and ranks among the top rebounders nationally. This season, he has posted ten double-doubles, which is first in the Big South and eighth nationally.
Presbyterian will return to action at home this week with two Big South Conference games starting Wednesday, January 21, against Charleston Southern at the Templeton Center.
