Garcia Takes Center Stage at Lander Art Gallery

The public is invited to see the Ashley Garcia solo exhibit “What Could Be,” on display at the Lander University Art Gallery through Wednesday, Dec. 14.

The gallery, located in the Abney Cultural Center, is open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Admission is free.

As a graduating senior in Lander’s Bachelor of Fine Arts program, Garcia has worked with a variety of materials, including cement, wood and steel. However, she said, “My strength is in clay. I always go to clay to turn the ideas into what they are as a sculpture.”

Garcia, of Greenville, plans to pursue a Master of Fine Arts degree, but she may take a break from her studies in the spring, to immerse herself more fully in the work that she does for Greenville ceramics artist Diana Farfan, whom she has known for six years.

She also wants to “keep on doing work and showing it, and see how far that takes me,” she said.

Lander Professor of Art Doug McAbee described Garcia as “very self-motivated. She will stick with something until she finds some sort of satisfaction with it, and if she’s not happy with it, you don’t see it.”

He said that working with her “has been a privilege for all of us.”
