Erskine Baseball | Becerra flirts with cycle in road game at Lynn

The Erskine College baseball team (3-2) was defeated by Lynn University (2-1-1) by a score of 8-7 at the Lynn University Baseball Field on Thursday afternoon to begin its Florida weekend trip. Armando Becerra tallied four extra base hits for the Fleet, including a game-tying home run in the ninth.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Juan Jaime opened the scoring for the Fleet with an RBI double in the second inning, but Lynn responded by scoring the next three runs of the game and taking a 3-1 lead. However, Erskine scrapped across three runs in the fifth inning and immediately regained the lead thanks to RBIs from Christian Rivera, David Hernandez, and Rolando Lujo in the frame. Cooper Guest retired the Knights in order in the bottom half of the fifth, and Armando Becerra gave him some insurance with an RBI triple. The Fleet headed to the eighth inning, holding a narrow 5-4 lead, before it was Tariq Bacon's turn to hit a run-scoring triple, making it a 6-4 game. But, a bases-loaded hit by pitch followed by a two-run single put Lynn back in front, heading into the ninth. However, that lead was short-lived as Becerra launched a game-tying home run to lead off the inning and tie the game at 7. The hosts would throw the final punch, though, as they walked it off in the bottom half of the inning, and the Fleet dropped a heartbreaker, 8-7, to begin its weekend trip in the Sunshine State.

THE PLAYER
Armando Becerra went 4-for-5 and was just a single short of the cycle as he racked up 11 total bases for the game, scoring two runs and driving in a pair as well. Becerra was also a threat on the basepaths, swiping two bags for the Fleet in the game.

WHAT'S NEXT?
Erskine is back in action on Friday afternoon as they'll make the short trip to Miami Shores to take on Barry University (3-0) at 6 p.m. in what will be the first ever meeting between the teams.
